Bread and Cheese Bake
Put together this combination the night before and refrigerate to give the flavours time to mellow.
Servings: 6
Ingredients:
-
1/4 cup (50 mL) butter
1 clove garlic, minced
6 slices french bread (1 in/2.5 cm thick)
6 dill pickles, thinly sliced
6 thin slices cooked ham
2 cups (500 mL) shredded swiss cheese (about 8 oz/250g)
1/2 cup (125 mL) chicken stock
pepper
Preparation:
In small bowl, cream together butter and garlic. Spread mixture lightly on both sides of bread slices.
Line bottom of 13- x 9-inch (3.5 L) baking dish with single layer of bread slices. Arrange pickle slices on bread; top each with 1 slice of ham.
Combine cheese and stock; spread evenly over top. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
While oven is preheating, let casserole stand at room temperature. Bake, uncovered, in 350°F (180°C) oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and edges of bread start to brown. If desired, place under broiler for a few minutes to brown bread more. Sprinkle with pepper to taste and serve immediately.
