A little smoky flavour adds authenticity to a tasty dessert cooked over the fire or a camp-stove burner. Use any dried fruit you like (small fruit will not need to be chopped) or substitute pears for apples. Leftovers are terrific for breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 6 tart apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried fruit mix
  • 1/2 cup apple juice or orange juice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 cups granola or oatmeal cookies, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans

Preparation

In skillet, heat sugar and butter until melted and bubbling. Add apples, dried fruit, apple juice and cinnamon; cover with foil and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes or until apples are translucent and liquid is syrupy. Remove foil; sprinkle with granola and pecans.
