In the December 2004 issue, the recipe for Really Good Rum Balls calls for 1/2 cup chocolate shot. What exactly is chocolate shot?

Chocolate shot is another name for chocolate sprinkles (the sort you'd find on top of a donut). You'll find them in the baking aisle of your grocery store or in bulk food stores. They may also go by the name of Chocolate Décors. Those are thin dark brown sprinkles, about 1/4-inch (5 mm) long (not the tiny round balls).
