Chili Burgers
Many hands make light work. While one cook makes the patties, the other puts together the sauce and — presto! — supper's on the table.
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
-
1 lb (500 g) ground beef or pork
1/2 cup (125 mL) bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper
2 tsp (10 mL) vegetable oil
4 hamburger buns, toasted
Sauce:
1 onion, chopped
1 can (7-1/2 oz/213 mL) tomato sauce
3/4 cup (175 mL) chicken stock
1/2 tsp (2 mL) chili powder
1/2 tsp (2 mL) paprika
1/2 tsp (2 mL) dried oregano
1/4 tsp (1 mL) cayenne pepper (optional)
Preparation:
In bowl, mix beef, bread crumbs, egg, salt and pepper; shape into 4 patties. In skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; cook patties for 5 minutes per side. Remove from pan and set aside; pour off fat from skillet.
Sauce: Combine onion, tomato sauce, chicken stock, chili powder, paprika, oregano and cayenne pepper (if using); pour into skillet and bring to boil.
Reduce heat to low and return patties to pan; cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes, turning patties once. Place patties on bottom halves of buns; pour sauce over patties and top with remaining buns.
