0pt for these not-so-ordinary crackers for your party. Flecked with orange and green, they are attractive, and the cayenne packs a punch.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup shredded old cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp dried chives
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 3 tbsp cold butter

Preparation

In bowl, combine flour, cheese, chives, baking powder, salt and cayenne. Using pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup (50 mL) water, tossing until mixture comes together in ball, adding up to 1 tbsp (15 mL) more water if necessary.

On lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8-inch (3 mm) thickness. Using 2-inch (5 cm) cookie cutter, cut into crackers, rerolling and cutting scraps once. Place on lightly greased baking sheets; prick each cracker 3 times with fork. Bake, 1 tray at a time, in 400°F (200°C) oven for 15 minutes or until golden and crispy. (Can be stored in airtight container for up to 1 day.)
