How to choose the best Father's Day gift

Let’s hear it for great dads! They deserve a day of recognition and a fabulous gift of appreciation to go along with it. Spoil him on Father’s Day with a get-together, whether big or small, and a formidable feast as well. If you’re stumped when it comes to shopping for your foodie father, keep the following tips in mind

• Although Father's Day falls in June, you don't have to restrict yourself to summer-themed gift ideas. Think outside of the season for other things he may enjoy, such as a soup Thermos for fall lunches or hot chocolate mixes and a stylish mug for cold winter evenings.

• If your dad is a big outdoor cook, rally the troops—mom, siblings and friends—and have everyone chip in to get him the backyard grilling kitchen of his dreams. He’ll love this gift even more than several smaller gifts – and, as a bonus, he’s likely to fire it up for a feast the same night!

• Every man has a signature drink, whether it’s a classic gin martini or a seriously strong sidecar. Purchase the necessary liquor, some stir sticks and the appropriate glassware – is it served in a high ball or a snifter? – and then put the whole thing together in a gift box. Voila! Dad is ready to toast the weekend with his favourite tipple in hand.

• If your dad is all thumbs in the kitchen, perhaps some cooking workshops (like the ones offered at Calphalon Culinary Center) are in order. They’re fun, low-key events that last only a few hours, so there’s no obligation to stick a class out over a number of weeks if he doesn’t like it.

• Is there a certain dish that reminds him of home (whether near or abroad)? This is a sentimental gift idea that he’ll surely appreciate. Join forces with your loved ones to host a Father’s Day dinner featuring all of the dishes your dad grew up loving over the years cooked by the people he loves the most.

• A pass for a wine tasting at a local vineyard or a gift certificate to his favourite restaurant make for quick and fail-safe gifts. Better still, couple a gift certificate with a promise to join him on the excursion – after all, you’re his favourite gift of all.
