Pick your own fresh food across Canada

Take your family on a farm or orchard adventure.

By Steve Biggs

Eastern Canada
Proximity to the ocean gives a moderate climate in many areas, so berries and vegetables are widespread. While the Annapolis valley is a hub for fruit production, other areas may also have fruit trees such as pears and cherries. Specialties to look for are blueberries and cranberries.

Pick cut flowers at Matheson Century Farms, then visit the market selling organic vegetables and eggs from a heritage chicken breed. There is a corn maze for the kids at River Breeze Farm Market, a pick-your-own farm near Truro. Most people get cranberries from the freezer, but at Terra Beata Cranberry Farm near Lunenburg you can pick cranberries, then take a tour of the cranberry bog.

Pointers
Picking
Look under the leaves to make sure you have picked the plant clean.

For strawberries, leave the green cap attached so that the fruit will keep longer. Cup the berry in your hands, then pinch the stem between thumb and fingers. Be prepared to have red stains on your knees at the end of the day!

For taller crops like raspberries and currants, leave both hands free to pick by wearing a picking container fastened with a string around your neck or waist.

Checklist
• sunscreen and clothing to prevent scratches and sunburn
• picking containers (check ahead -- many farms supply containers)
• knee pads never hurt in the strawberry patch
• go early in the day to avoid midday heat and picked-over rows
• don't forget a picnic lunch and lots of water
• check availability before you go!

Luckily, you won't be weighed on the way out of the patch, so enjoy!
