Yum! Treats from Japan

The Test Kitchen chooses palate-pleasing favourites.

By Gabrielle Bright, The Canadian Living Test Kitchen

A recent trip to the Halifax Farmer's Market allowed us to sample some of Nova Scotia's finest wine and cheese in the test kitchen this week. If you happen to be in Halifax any time soon, here are our favourites so you can give them a try:

Domaine de Grand Pré Pomme d'Or
Domaine de Grand Pré in the Annapolis Valley makes a delightfully sweet, fruity, dark amber dessert wine called Pomme d'Or from both old and new varieties of local apples. It has rich baked apple flavour with a long, sweet finish. At only $19.50 for a 375 mL bottle, it's a great way to end a fall meal or to enjoy with the following cheeses.

That Dutchman's Farm: Dragon's Breath Cheese
Maja and Willem van den Hoek (and family) have been producing farmstead Gouda in Upper Economy since 1980. Though we loved it (we tried medium and thistle varieties), their Dragon's Breath cheese really caught our attention. Described as a little brother to Stilton, Roquefort and gorgonzola, this black wax-covered cheese develops mould around the sides (stirring it up and waiting a couple of days help activate it even more). We loved its creamy yet chalky texture and mild blue flavour, but it sure does stink (hence the name). With the Pomme d'Or, it's a new classic combination.

Fox Hill Cheese House: Havarti Cheese with Fenugreek
Richard and Jeanita Rand of Fox Hill Cheese of Port Williams produce cheddar, gouda, havarti and fresh quark from their 50-head herd of Holstein cows. Their fresh and mild havarti with fenugreek was a real surprise for us. Fenugreek is a curry-like spice commonly found in Indian cooking, but in this cheese it has a nutty, maple flavour that pairs quite nicely with the Pomme d'Or.
