Custardy Bread-and-Butter Pudding

Suggested Recipes

4 tsp (20 mL) butter, softened
4 slices day-old bread, crusts removed
1-1/2 cups (375 mL) milk
1/4 cup (50 mL) granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
Pinch nutmeg
Topping:
1 tsp (5 mL) granulated sugar
Preparation:
Grease two 2-cup (500 mL) baking dishes; set aside.
Butter bread; cut into 3/4-inch (2 cm) cubes. In bowl, whisk milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla and nutmeg; add bread and toss to coat. Divide between prepared dishes.
Topping: Sprinkle sugar over top. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven until knife inserted in centre comes out clean, 45 minutes.
