Ingredients

    1 egg
1 lb (500 g) regular or lean ground beef
1 cup (250 mL) shredded Canadian Cheddar cheese
1 green apple, peeled and grated
1/4 cup (50 mL) bread crumbs
    1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
    1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper
1 tbsp (15 mL) each Dijon mustard and mayonnaise
4 onion seed buns or hamburger buns
    Alfalfa sprouts (optional)

Preparation

In bowl, beat egg with fork; mix in beef, cheese, apple, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. Shape into four 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick patties.

In cast-iron or nonstick skillet, fry patties over medium-high heat, turning once, until thermometer inserted sideways into centre registers 160º F (71º C), about 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk together Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Sandwich burgers in buns; top with mustard mixture, and alfalfa sprouts (if using).
