Koeksister, South Africa

Brought to South Africa by the Dutch, the Koeksister ("Cook-sister") is a braided fried dough sweet, similar to Greek loukoumades, in that they too are soaked in sugar syrup. The name comes from the Dutch word for cake, koek. Depending on the region, the syrup of this Afrikaaner speciality may be infused with orange, vanilla, cinnamon, or ginger. The people of Cape Malay sprinkle their koeksisters with shredded coconut.
