Mair: Sometimes people aren't looking for specific flavours when enjoying a dram of whisky - they just love what they taste and enjoy it for that! However, there are numerous recognized flavours in The Balvenie malt whisky range. These range from honey, rich fruit, vanilla, spice, to oak, dark chocolate and liquorice, and many more!
CL: Why is there such a wide price range for scotches? Can you buy a decent scotch for under $50?
Mair: Price depends on various aspects. Mainly age (whisky evaporates during maturation!), but also with cask types used for maturation, quantity produced. Try checking out Balvenie DoubleWood - it would be the closest Balvenie to the above cost.
CL: What is the difference between scotch and other whisky?
Mair: Scotch is whisky made in Scotland. Other whiskies from other parts of the globe cannot legally be called scotch as they are not made in Scotland. Ingredients can be the same however, but other whiskies can be made from rye, corn, etc.
CL: How should you drink scotch if you are trying it for the first time?
Mair: You need to find a way you like. Enjoyment is the only rule! Peoples' tastes/preferences vary, so find one with a flavour you like as the starting point. It may be that a drop of water added to the whisky is preferred - that helps to bring out more flavour on occasions and makes it easier to drink.
CL: Should you ever mix scotch? Are there cocktails you can make from scotch?
Mair: Yes. These are growing in popularity, using the rich flavours to complement the cocktail.
