Maybe you've been there, staring at a bunch of labels at the liquor store, confused about which wine to buy. What is it about this drink that intimidates you so? Maybe you've encountered the dreaded wine snob who made you feel unrefined because you couldn't tell a Chardonnay from a Cabernet Sauvignon. To purchase a bottle with confidence, all you need to know are some basics. Don't worry about what makes one wine better than another -- try a few varieties and let your tastebuds be your guides.

Get acquainted with the big names
The world of wine can be divided into two distinct areas: reds and whites. There are many grape varieties for each group, but here's a list of some of the most common ones you'll find on labels.
