5 foods worth making from scratch

1. Cookies
Homemade cookies are infinitely better than their dry, tasteless store-bought cousins. Cookies are one of the easiest treats to bake at home, and a great way to get the kids involved! Make up a batch of these Best-Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies, bake off a few and freeze the rest for when that fresh, warm-from-the-oven cookie craving hits. Homemade cookies are also the perfect way to sneak in a few healthy additions like whole wheat flour, ground flax meal, wheat bran, quinoa—or bake gluten-free!

2. Cake

Although most grocery stores sell super-sugary cakes and boxed cake mixes (both with ingredient lists as long as a novel), anyone would prefer a homemade cake on their birthday! This Ultimate Chocolate Layer Cake comes together in minutes like a cake mix, plus it's egg and dairy-free and only dirties one bowl! It's so easy there is no excuse to buy a store-bought cake again.

3. Mayonnaise
Real mayonnaise, easily made with eggs, vinegar and oil, tastes so much better than the store-bought version. Try making small batches using different oils, or boosting the flavour by adding Sriracha or fresh herbs at the end. And there's no need to worry about eating a little raw egg. When properly handled, eating raw, refrigerated Canada Grade ‘A' eggs with clean, uncracked shells is not problem for healthy people—only those with a compromised immune system, very young children, the elderly and pregnant women should avoid them.

4. Meatballs
Take a pass on frozen, store-bought, flavourless meat (and soy protein) balls. The meat is ground so fine that the texture is dry and terrible! It's so easy to make a big batch of moist, all-meat, super-flavourful, Infinitely adaptable to any flavours, try turkey meatballs, kick up the spice with a hoisin and pork version, or go traditional Swedish! Use an ice cream scoop to quickly divide up the meat mix into perfectly portioned balls.

5. Whipped Cream
Yes, canned whipped cream may seem convenient, but reading the ingredients (think stabilizers and propellants) will have you craving the real stuff. 35% whipping cream, sweetened with a little sugar, if desired, will whip up in just a few minutes. Check out these 3 tips for whipped cream success.
