Tested Till Perfect

For an easy winter project, mix up a batch of bird food to put outside. Then sit by the window and wait for the feast to begin.

Servings:

Ingredients:

Preparation:

Peanut Butter Pinecones:
Lay 2 pieces of waxed paper on work surface. In centre of 1, spoon peanut butter; on the other, sprinkle birdseed.

Roll 5-inch (12 cm) pinecone in peanut butter until coated; roll in birdseed. Spoon extra birdseed into spaces.

Tie twine around tip of cone; tie other end around tree branch just outside window. Makes 1 pinecone.

Suet Cakes:
Suet attracts all sorts of insect-eating birds. The fat is a good source of energy and heat – just what birds need in winter.

In top of double boiler, melt suet. Stir in birdseed and other treat.

Divide among 6 paper-lined muffin cups. Refrigerate until hard. Remove from paper cups. Poke hole through centre, thred twine through hole and attach to tree. Freeze any leftover cakes. Makes 6 cakes.
