This ham-and-cheese sandwich is the perfect snack for big kids with large appetites. Drain the salsa so you won't have a soggy sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp 2tspbutter, softened
  • 2 slices 2sliceslight rye bread, or other sandwich bread
  • 1 thin slice 1thin sliceBlack Forest ham
  • 2 tbsp 2tbspsalsa
  • 1/3 cup 1/3cupshredded Cheddar cheese

Preparation

Spread butter over 1 side of each bread slice; lay, butter side down, on work surface. Top 1 slice with ham and salsa; sprinkle with cheese. Top with second slice, butter-side up.

Grill in panini press until crisp and browned and cheese is melted, 2 to 3 minutes. (Or grill in cast-iron skillet over medium heat, pressing and turning once, about 5 minutes.) Makes 1 serving.

Additional information : Variation: 
Swiss Croque Monsieur
Spread 1-1/2 tsp grainy mustard on unbuttered side of bread slice. Top with ham; 1 pickle, thinly sliced; and 1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese.
