Caterers always serve some type of meaty skewer for good reason: They're so easy to assemble, take mere minutes to cook and are consistently one of the first items to disappear. To make thin, even slices easily, freeze the steaks until firm, 15 to 20 minutes, before cutting.

  • 450 g strip loin grilling steaks
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce

Slice steaks crosswise into about 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick strips. Toss together steak, ginger, five-spice powder, salt and pepper until coated.

Thread steak onto metal or soaked wooden skewers; arrange on lightly greased rimmed baking sheet. Brush both sides with hoisin sauce. Broil (without turning) until medium-rare, about 6 minutes.
