Offer frosty glasses of a light wine punch to sip before sitting down to dinner. Soda water or freshly squeezed orange juice poured over crushed ice make alternative non-alcoholic sippers. You can garnish the drinks with orange slices and fresh mint for a festive appearance.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1/2 cup fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 strip orange rind
  • 1 bottle (750 mL) dry white wine, (such as Riesling)
  • 1 tray ice cubes
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced and seeded
  • 1-1/2 cups soda water

Preparation

Several hours before serving, stir together sugar and brandy in large bowl until sugar has dissolved. Add mint and orange rind; press with back of wooden spoon to release some of the flavours. Stir in wine; cover and chill for at least 2 hours.

At serving time, remove orange rind and mint with slotted spoon. Stir in ice, orange slices and soda water. Serve immediately, including some of the ice and orange slices in each glass.
