Canadian Living's exclusive chat with international food sensation Gordon Ramsay

Renowned food personality, star of sensational cooking shows such as The F Word and Kitchen Nightmares, author of 26 books and owner of multiple top restaurants across the globe, chef Gordon Ramsay had CL Advantage members howling with laughter within seconds of the start of his interview with Canadian Living Food Director Annabelle Waugh at St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto, a CL Advantage event held Nov. 19, 2010 in partnership with Van Houtte coffee.

We laughed and we cheered for the entire hour as Waugh held her own against this larger than life personality known for his foul mouth and bad temper. I should have brought popcorn.

Ramsay set a saucy and playful mood, sprinkling serious answers about his new book, -  Gordon Ramsay’s World Kitchen (Key Porter Books, 2010) - with innuendos like “I’m good at every position…[uproarious laughter from the audience]…in the KITCHEN! For heaven’s sake you people!”

Equally entertaining was Waugh, sparring expertly with Ramsay’s suggestive jokes and keeping the interview on track. She mentioned how the true test of a good palate is to blindfold the taster, and Ramsay replied he'd love to blindfold her, too. Unphased, she turned to the crowd and asked “if someone could arrange that for later,” steering Ramsay right back to her question before the crowd could finish giggling.

He did stump her for a second, staring into her eyes and calling her, "a bright button". It took Waugh a moment to stop laughing and compose herself. The crowd was in stitches.

All jokes aside, we learned about the life and career of the controversial Gordon Ramsay. He showed us his softer side, telling us that sharing a birthday dinner with his young daughter (both born on the same date) brings tears to his eyes. He opened up about his fears of imperfection and how they drive his career as a chef. For someone with a reputation as being mean and nasty, the Canadian Living audience was charmed by a kind and sensitive man.
