Seville oranges add pleasant bitterness to this warming punch. Use navel oranges for a slightly sweeter version. Choose inexpensive light-bodied Spanish wine, such as Torres Sangre de Toro, to balance the strong taste of Madeira. 

Ingredients

  • 2 bottles (each 750 mL) red wine 2 bottles (each 750 mL) red wine
  • 2 cups Madeira 2 cups Madeira
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 4 oz orange-flavoured liqueur 4 oz orange-flavoured liqueur
  • 8 whole cloves 8 whole cloves
  • 1-1/2 cinnamon stick 1-1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 2 Seville oranges , sliced2 Seville oranges or navel oranges, sliced

Preparation

In saucepan, bring wine, Madeira, sugar, liqueur, cloves, cinnamon and oranges just to simmer.

Reduce heat to low; cook, without simmering, for 10 minutes.
