"My grandmother always made these cookies when we went to visit," says Jude. "My mother tried to make them but Nanny always made them best." These spicy cookies are perfect served with another favourite — frothy cold milk.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup fancy molasses
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk

Preparation

Cream together shortening with sugar. Mix in molasses, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Mix in one-third of the flour; mix in half of the milk. Repeat once. Mix in remaining flour. Form into ball. Refrigerate dough for 4 hours.

On floured surface, roll out half of the dough to 1/4-inch (5 mm) thickness; cut into 2-1/2 inch (6 cm) rounds. Repeat with remaining dough. Transfer to greased baking sheets; bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 15 minutes or until edges are golden brown. (Can be stored in airtight container for up to 1 week)
