Hanukkah is a traditional Jewish holiday, often celebrated with a meal centred around potato latkes. But there are many more delicious recipes to add to the holiday menu. From brisket to baked goods, both kids and adults will enjoy making and sharing these time-honoured Hanukkah recipes.

1. Lemon Menorah Cake
This handsome Hanukkah cake can be the centrepiece for a family party. The surprise is how easy it is to make such a delicious cake from scratch and, just as important, how little time it takes to decorate it.
2. Nutty Halvah Cheesecake
Halvah is candy made in blocks from ground sesame seeds and honey and can contain chopped pistachios and dried fruit. It even comes in a marble form and covered with chocolate. Add chunks of this sweet, with its toasty sesame flavour, to a creamy cheesecake.
Rugalahs are one of the most requested Hanukkah cookies, now popular year-round. When the nut and fruit crescents bake, they ooze ever so slightly, and this rich filling gets crisp and caramel-like around the crescents.
Bialys are traditional Jewish onion- and poppy seed-topped buns that originated in Bialystok in Poland. Immigrants popularized them in North America, especially in New York, where they are almost as popular as bagels.
While latkes are the number one Hanukkah recipe in Canada, these sugar-coated jam-filled doughnuts are getting more recognition every year.
6. Fudgy Hanukkah Cake
At Hanukkah, it's traditional to hand out small gifts of money (called Hanukkah gelt), either real or chocolate, to children. Tuck gold-wrapped chocolate coins into the batter to surprise your youngsters with a little treat.
7. Lacy Golden Latkes
The plates are ready, the skillet hot and the latkes - crisp potato pancakes - are sizzling up lacy and golden brown, ready to be devoured with dollops of applesauce and sour cream. Latkes, the Yiddish word for pancakes, are the most anticipated dish at the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. But latkes are so deliciously addictive that it would be a shame not to make them year-round.

9. Rosemary-Rubbed Beef Brisket
Brisket becomes ultratender when braised in red wine and beef broth. It makes the perfect centrepiece for a holiday meal. If the brisket has the fat attached (which is ideal for maximum moistness), place it fat side up in the roasting pan.
10. Squash Couscous
Couscous, the final course at a special meal, is served to satisfy guests so that no one leaves hungry. This steamed preparation takes a little longer than the instant method familiar to most Canadians but the plumper al dente texture is well worth the effort.
