1 egg
1/4 cup (50 mL) dry bread crumbs
1 onion, grated
2 tbsp (25 mL) wine vinegar
2 tsp (10 mL) dijon mustard
1 tsp (5 mL) dried basil
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper
1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
1/4 cup (50 mL) light mayonnaise
2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped fresh basil (or 1 tsp/5 mL dried)
4 whole wheat hamburger buns
4 lettuce leaves
1 tomato, sliced
1 cup (250 mL) alfalfa sprouts
Preparation:
In bowl, beat egg with 2 tbsp (25 mL) water. Stir in bread crumbs, onion, vinegar, mustard, basil, garlic, salt and pepper; mix in beef. Shape into four 3/4-inch (2 cm) thick patties. Place on greased grill or in nonstick skillet over medium heat; close lid and grill or pan-fry, turning once, until no longer pink inside, about 15 minutes.
In clean bowl, whisk mayonnaise with basil; spread on buns. Sandwich lettuce, tomato, sprouts and burgers in buns.
