6 apples (about 2-1/2 lb/1.25 kg)
1/4 cup (50 mL) apple cider or juice
1 tbsp (15 mL) lemon juice
3/4 cup (175 mL) dry bread crumbs
1/2 cup (125 mL) packed brown sugar
1/4 cup (50 mL) unsalted butter, melted
3/4 tsp (4 mL) cinnamon
Pinch each ground nutmeg and allspice
Plain or frozen vanilla yogurt (optional)
Preparation:
Peel and core apples; cut into 1/4-inch (5 mm) thick slices. In bowl, toss together apples, cider and lemon juice; spread in 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking dish.
In separate bowl, toss together bread crumbs, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice; sprinkle over apples. Cover with foil. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven just until tender, about 45 minutes.
Uncover and bake until bubbly and topping is golden and crispy, about 20 minutes. Serve with frozen yogurt (if desired).
