This recipe is a healthier alternative to muffins for my kids. They are nut free and are made with whole wheat flour for a little extra fibre.

  • 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 cups white flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1/3 cup light sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate chips


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray or line 8 muffin cups.

Combine first five ingredients in a mixing bowl. Blend sugar and egg in another mixing bowl. Add oil, honey, applesauce, sour cream and vanilla. Mix well.

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and blend until just combined. Batter will be thick.

Add chocolate chips and bake for 12-15 minutes.
