  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 6 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 cups rice crisp cereal
  • 12 gummy candies
  • 6 gummy candies
  • 2 tablespoons green chocolate coating wafers (such as Merckens)
  • 12 pretzel sticks
  • 3 cups white chocolate coating wafers (such as Merckens)
  • 2 1/2 cups red decorating sugar

In saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; stir in marshmallows until smooth. Stir in vanilla. Scrape into greased large bowl; using greased spoon, stir in cereal until coated. Let stand until cool enough to handle, about 2 minutes.

For each apple, with greased hands, tightly pack scant 1 cup of the rice cereal mixture around 1 gummy worm to create ball, leaving 1 inch (2.5 cm) of worm extending from ball. (If cereal mixture gets too firm to mould easily, set bowl over saucepan of simmering water until softened.) Let stand on waxed paper–lined baking sheet until set, about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, stand each gummy leaf on edge; using sharp knife, cut in half through edge to make 2 leaves. In small microwaveable bowl, microwave green coating wafers on medium, stirring once, until melted, about 35 seconds.

Dip stem end of each gummy leaf into green coating; attach to edge of pretzel, about 1/2 inch (1 cm) from bottom. Let stand on waxed paper–lined baking sheet until set, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, in microwaveable bowl, melt white coating wafers on medium, stirring every 15 seconds, until melted, about 45 seconds.

Using gummy worm as handle, hold each apple over bowl; spoon white coating over surface, letting excess drip back into bowl. Sprinkle generously all over with decorating sugar. Place on waxed paper–lined baking sheet.

Insert bottom of 1 pretzel into top of each apple. Let stand until dry, about 30 minutes. (Make-ahead: Store in airtight container for up to 3 days.)
