Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons liquid honey
  • 1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
  • 4 cups unsalted mixed nuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon hickory liquid smoke

Method

In saucepan, bring brown sugar, oil, honey, pepper and 3 tbsp water to boil; cook for 2 minutes.

In large bowl, mix nuts with brown sugar mixture until coated; stir in salt and liquid smoke. Spread on parchment paper–lined baking sheet.

Bake in 375 F (190 C) oven, stirring 3 times, until deep golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely on pan, stirring and breaking up nuts often to prevent clumps. (Make-ahead: Store in airtight container for up to 2 days.)
