For a nonalcoholic alternative, double the pineapple juice and omit the vodka. Garnish with a basil leaf or sprig of pineapple basil.

Ingredients

  • 4 fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz soda water

Method

Place basil and sugar in cocktail shaker. With muddler or back of wooden spoon, muddle until leaves are bruised and fragrant, about 1 minute. Fill with ice; muddle a few times.

Add pineapple juice and vodka; shake vigorously to blend and chill. Strain into martini glass; top with soda water.
