Slow Cooker Chili Barbecue Sauce

In a world of zany new flavours, sometimes all you want is a reliably delicious sauce – one everyone will like. This is it. Try it on meatballs, brisket, short ribs, baby back ribs, chicken pieces, pork tenderloin and chops, or anywhere else you want to slather on a no-nonsense barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cups bottled strained tomatoes (passata)
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup fancy molasses
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons pepper

Method

In large skillet, heat oil over medium heat; cook onion and garlic, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to slow cooker.

Stir in tomatoes, 1 cup water, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, brown sugar, chili powder, mustard and pepper.

Cover and cook on low until thickened enough to coat spoon, 5 to 7 hours. (Make-ahead: Let cool for 30 minutes; refrigerate in airtight containers for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 1 month.)
