Ingredients

    Flaked coconut and icing_sugar
    Snow Family:
    5 cups (1.25 L) miniature marshmallows (or 40 large)
    1/4 cup (50 mL) butter
    1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla
    6 cups (1.5 L) RICE KRISPIES* cereal
1 cup (250 mL) assorted small candies
    Gumdrops
    Ribbon and string licorice
    Christmas Trees:
    5 cups (1.25 L) miniature marshmallows (or 40 large)
    1/4 cup (50 mL) butter
1 tbsp (15 mL) green liquid food colouring (or 1/8 tsp/0.5 mL green paste food colouring)
    6 cups (1.5 L) RICE KRISPIES* cereal
    30 mini-gumdrops
5 assorted hard candies (preferably star-shaped)

Preparation

Snow Family: In large saucepan over medium-low heat, melt marshmallows with butter, stirring constantly, until smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Stir in vanilla. Stir in half of the Rice Krispies* until combined. Add remaining cereal, stirring to coat. Scrape into greased bowl; let cool slightly.

With greased hands, firmly press mixture into balls as follows: for adults, 4 each 2-inch (5 cm) bottoms, 1-1/2 inch (4 cm) middles and 1-inch (2.5 cm) heads; for children, 5 each 1-1/2-inch (4 cm) bottoms and 1-inch (2.5 cm) heads; for dogs, 2 each 1-1/2 inch (4 cm) bodies (shape into ovals) and 1-inch (2.5 cm) heads.

Press on assorted small candies for eyes, noses, buttons and dogs' ears and legs. Skewer gumdrops on toothpicks and insert into adults' and children's heads for hats. For scarves, wrap ribbon licorice around necks; make slit about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from 1 end of each and thread other end through to secure. Attach string licorice for dogs' tails. Refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.

Christmas Trees: In large saucepan, melt marshmallows with butter over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until smooth, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in food colouring until tinted evenly. Stir in half of the Rice Krispies* until combined. Add remaining cereal, stirring to coat. Scrap onto lightly greased 15- x 10-inch (40 x 25 cm) baking sheet. With greased hands, firmly press mixture evenly over pan. Let cool for 10 minutes before cutting out shapes.

Using graduated star-shaped cookie cutters, cut out 10 each of 3 different-size stars.

To assemble each tree, stack 2 of the largest stars on plate; top with 2 medium stars, angling points in between points of bottom stars. Top with 2 small stars. Decorate with mini-gumdrops; top with star-shaped hard candy.

On large plate, arrange trees around snow family figures. Sprinkle plate with flaked coconut and dust with icing sugar.
