Serve topped with cilantro alongside a generous helping of couscous or flatbread. For mild flavour, omit the cayenne pepper.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (28 oz/796 mL) whole tomatoes 1 can (28 oz/796 mL) whole tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • Meatballs:
  • 1 small onion , grated1 small onion, grated

  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green olives 1/4 cup finely chopped green olives
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds , crushed1 tsp cumin seeds, crushed
  • 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1-1/2 lb medium ground beef 1-1/2 lb medium ground beef or lean ground beef

Preparation

Meatballs: In large bowl, stir together onion, egg, bread crumbs, cilantro, olives, cumin seeds, oregano, salt, pepper and cinnamon; mix in beef. Shape into 24 balls.

In slow cooker, combine onion, garlic, paprika, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, cayenne pepper, salt, and saffron threads (if using). Stir in tomatoes and tomato paste, crushing tomatoes with hands or potato masher. Top with meatballs.

Cover and cook on low until digital rapid read thermometer inserted in a few meatballs registers 160°F (71°C), about 6 hours.
