Dried papaya, pineapple and mango  infuse toothsome oats with a taste of the tropics. This makes a great sunny breakfast for a cold blustery morning. 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup steel-cut oats 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 1/4 cup chopped dried papayas 1/4 cup chopped dried papayas
  • 1/4 cup chopped dried pineapples 1/4 cup chopped dried pineapples
  • 1/4 cup chopped dried mangoes 1/4 cup chopped dried mangoes
  • 2 whole cloves 2 whole cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 pinch nutmeg 1 pinch nutmeg

Preparation

In saucepan, bring milk and 2-1/2 cups (625 mL) water to boil. Stir in oats, papaya, pineapple, mango, cloves, allspice, salt and nutmeg; return to boil.

Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered and stirring occasionally, until oats are tender, about 35 minutes. Discard cloves.
