Sweet and Savoury Pine Nuts
Often found in various dishes on a New Year's Eve banquet table, pine nuts represent fecundity, traditionally granting diners “a hundred sons.” These nuts also make a terrific cocktail-party snack.

1 cup (250mL) pine nuts (5 oz/150g)
1/4 cup (50mL) granulated sugar
1/2 tsp (2mL) salt
Pinch cayenne pepper
1/4 cup (50mL) vegetable oil
Preparation:
In skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat; fry nut mixture, stirring constantly, until light golden, about 3 minutes. Drain in sieve. Scatter on large plate or parchment paper; let cool. Separate any nuts stuck together. (Make-ahead: Cover and store in airtight container for up to 2 weeks.)
