A carbonated soft drink developed in 1903 in Bennettsville, South Carolina, by Dr. C. R. May, who devised the drink after encouraging his patients to drink local mineral-rich well water for stomach ailments. He added Jamaican ginger to make the drink more palatable, and a business was born.
