Juniper

A tree, Juniperus communis, producing aromatic berries used to flavor gin, game, sauerkraut, pâté and salads. Historically, juniper was regarded as a magic shrub to protect against devils, evil spirits and wild animals. The Bible mentions juniper as a symbol of protection. Legend has it that juniper planted beside the front door will keep out witches; the only way for a witch to get past the plant is by correctly counting its needles. The Dutch were the first to flavor their gin with juniper berries in the 18th century, and juniper berries are said to stimulate the appetite.
