Navy Bean

Also pea bean, Yankee bean. This small white legume was so called because it has been a major part of the United States Navy's food rations since the 19th century. The navy bean is the state bean of Massachusetts, and in 1993, the state Legislature determined that the navy bean had been the original bean in the famous Boston baked beans recipe. See also bean.
