A casual, friendly meal taken on a day trip, eaten outdoors, usually in summer, from the French piquer, meaning "to pick at food", and nique, meaning "something small or inconsequential." Originally, "picnic" referred to an informal meal in which everyone paid their share or brought their own dish.
