Originally, a low-alcohol, naturally fizzy drink created by Philadelphia druggist Charles Hires, who fermented sugar and yeast with a combination of roots, herbs and barks. Today, it's a nonalcoholic carbonated beverage colored with caramel and flavored with natural and artificial flavorings.
