Sole

From the Latin solea, meaning "sandal", because its shape suggests the sole of a shoe, a flatfish dating back to the Romans, who called it soleo jovi, meaning Jupiter's sandal. Dover sole is so called not because it's caught near Dover, England, but because that city was the port through which the best sole was shipped to London fish markets. English sole, also known as lemon sole, is not really sole but flounder. See also fish.
