also carambola. A waxy yellow-orange fruit, Averrhoa carambola, starfruit is tart and juicy and can be eaten raw or sautéed. It gets its name for its star shape when sliced crosswise. Believed to have originated in Sri Lanka, it has been well known in Southeast Asia for centuries.
