Maybe you've heard of hairstylist to the stars Sally Hershberger. She gives Meg Ryan those choppy haircuts everybody wants, also lists Michelle Pfeiffer, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger as clients (and charges $600US/day for mere mortals at her New York salon).
Hershberger, who is Executive Style Director for the John Frieda Company and the co-creator of the successful lines “Sheer Blonde” and “Beach Blonde,” was recently in town for interviews. While I understand bedhead is a trend in some fashion circles, what I didn't expect to find was Hershberger literally lying in bed (she was fighting the flu). Needless to say, it was a short interview but Hershberger made a terrific point when she explained that women 40 and up tend to look younger with a short cut that's layered for lots of movement-think Jane Fonda's new do a couple of years back at the Oscars.
While the interview with Hershberger was short, the press information provided to editors offered great how-tos for two strong trends for the holidays. These tips feature Sheer Blonde styling products (which, by the way, also bring out hightlights in brunettes) but you can use your own favourite mousses and volumizing sprays.
Wild Waves
Take the elegant romantic hair of the 30s and add a little 70s disco to it. The look here is lots of wave and texture.
How to get it:
Apply Sheer Blonde Ambition Dual Action Mousse to damp hair to build body and give hair guts, by the way the Sheer Blonde products are not exclusively for blondes, they also bring out the highlights in brunettes. Then either blow-dry or allow hair to dry naturally. Next, use a curling iron to create tiny, structured curls all over. When you have finished adding curls, take a brush and brush them out, leaving hair loose, unstructured and undone. Spray Frizz-Ease Instant Touch-Up all over to control frizz and give hair a boost of shine.
Ponytail with an Edge
This is not the same ponytail you wore in elementary school. Today, even basic pulled-back hair has undergone a makeover. Get instant glam-punk, rocker-girl style with the unique mohawk ponytail.
How to get it:
Build volume and lift for even the finest hair by spraying Sheer Blonde Full-Blown Blonde Volumizing Spray to the underside of wet or dry hair, focusing on the roots, especially at the crown. Using a brush, blow-dry hair in the opposite direct it naturally falls, creating life and volume at the roots. Pull hair into a ponytail directly in the back of your head, at eye level, leaving the top, front section of the hair out. Tie the ponytail with an elastic keeping the sides pulled tight. Gently tease the front section with a comb or brush and spray with Sheer Blonde Crystal Clear Shape and Shimmer Hair Spray. To create the mohawk look add this section to your ponytail.
Sheer Blonde products are available at drugstores and fine retailers across Canada for $9.99 each or visit www.johnfrieda.com.
