Breast cancer is believed to develop as a result of inherited and environmental factors, including lifestyle and reproductive history. While some risks are non-modifiable there are choices you can make that may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Many of these behaviours may also help reduce your risk for other chronic diseases and conditions.
Here are some steps you can take that may reduce your breast cancer risk:
• Discuss the risks and benefits of taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with your doctor
• Consider the risks and benefits of using oral contraceptives
• Maintain a healthy body weight
• Be physically active
• If you drink, limit your alcohol consumption to one drink or less per day
• Avoid tobacco smoke, both active and passive (second-hand), especially if you are a young woman
• Eat a healthy diet
• Learn about carcinogens and how you might avoid them
