Well-being is a complicated notion. We all have times when we feel energized and empowered, and others when we just want to lie on the couch and eat Smarties®. Does that mean that we're not able to live a healthy life? Of course not. Well-being is really about finding balance, and these guidelines can help you to focus on some fundamental elements to consider in your quest for better living.
1. Variety is the spice of life
Just like they told you in school, it's important to eat from all food groups. If you follow Health Canada guidelines, you really will be on your way to healthier eating.
2. Enjoy what you eat
Healthy eating is not supposed to be a punishment. If you have a sweet-tooth or a penchant for high-fat foods, you can still indulge, but in moderation. And try to find new ways to prepare your favourite treats with reduced fat and sugar content.
3. Don't skip meals
If you're concerned about overeating, just eat smaller portions three or four times a day. Not only will you be far less hungry, you'll also keep your metabolism nicely revved all day – beginning of course with a balanced breakfast.
4. Exercise often
A mere 20 to 30 minutes of exercise four to five times a week will make you feel better and look marvelous. Regular exercise also helps ward off osteoporosis and heart disease.
5. Avoid extremes
Try not to eat too much or too little at any one meal. Neither one is good for you. Remember, it's about balance.
6. Fill up on fibre
Whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and beans are great sources of fibre that you should try and incorporate into your diet every day.
7. Drink up
Keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of fluid a day (non-caffeinated sources like water, juice or milk). Exercising will increase the amount of fluid your body needs 125 to 250 ml of extra fluid per 15 minutes of exercise. Water is the most accessible drink around and is essential to a healthy life.
8. Sleep well, be well
On average you should get about seven or eight hours a night. This may mean you need to start going to bed earlier, so grab a good book and snuggle in.
