Turn negatives into positives

by Michelle Williams

When it comes to your body and your style, it’s easy to get bogged down in the things you DON’T love about yourself – and much easier to accentuate the negative. But a lot of how you feel about your look is in your attitude.

Whenever I’m feeling pessimistic about my appearance,
I remember these important steps to feeling good about myself and about the way I look:

Talk to friends. The people who like you just the way you are happen to be your best cheerleaders! Whenever you need a lift, ask a friend what they see when they look at you. They’ll likely tell you great things about yourself that you may have never even realized before. Their observations can help you refocus your energies.

Eat well. Choose nutrient-rich food choices for making you feel good about yourself. A nutritious diet following Canada’s Food Guide is a great way to feel better physically – and as your body feels and looks healthier, you’ll feel better about you! It’s a great first step on the road to celebrating the way you look.

Exercise. Cycle to work, fit in an exercise class on your lunch hour, go for a walk after dinner or wind down after a busy day with a relaxing yoga class – activity stimulates various chemicals in the brain to leave you feeling happier and more relaxed, not to mention the positive benefits to your shape!

Drink lots of water. Water is refreshing, but it does so much more. It helps your body functions work better, aids digestion and keeps you hydrated.

Get lots of zzzzz’s. No doubt about it, it’s easier to feel positive when you’re feeling less fatigued. And when you don’t get enough sleep, your brain can confuse being tired with being hungry.

Dress for success. How you feel about your look is a reflection of the way you dress. Sloppy unattractive clothes speak volumes about how you’re feeling about the person you are. Look for key wardrobe pieces that help you accentuate your look – and show off your style!
