Your healthy weight: Stop imagining numbers
Sure, most of us have fantasized about a magic number we should weigh on the scale in order to look good.
But this needs to stop!
A healthy weight is not dependent on our bathroom scales, nor is there a magic number to apply to your individual body.
A healthy weight actually varies from one person to another. There is a range of weight allowed for every height. It's true! Real healthy weight analysis factors in the unique shapes and bone structures of each individual.
Most health professionals use the Body Mass Index (BMI), which relates body weight to health risks and shows whether someone's weight - whether too much or too little - is associated with good health or is putting someone at risk for health problems. The BMI allows for a range of weight for every height.
At the same time, many health professionals also measure waist circumference to analyse health risks. A higher waist circumference is associated with more abdominal fat which could lead to diseases later in life.
The bottom line about weight
Are you happy with your weight today? If you're like most people, you probably feel there's room for improvement. But in reality, if you practice good daily habits of eating well and staying active, you're likely already at a healthy weight for you.
"Many women who are a healthy weight think they have to lose weight. Others who are overweight think they're a healthy weight," says registered dietitian Lois Ferguson. “Healthy weight is all about eating sensibly, being physically active and feeling good –- not about monitoring every bite."
