Are you a healthy weight?

Find out what it means.

By Dairy Farmers of Canada

Are you a healthy weight?
The first thing you need to know is that a healthy weight is NOT one miracle number on the scale.

Healthy weight actually varies from one person to another. It is defined as a range of weights for any given height – the “range” allows for different body shapes and bone structures.

Health professionals use the Body Mass Index (BMI), which relates body weight to health risks and shows whether weight is associated with good health or is putting someone at risk for health problems. At the same time, measuring a person's waist circumference is a practical way to assess health risk – a high waist circumference is associated with abdominal fat and an increased risk for different diseases.

The bottom line about weight
When it comes to how much you weigh, it’s important to step back, be realistic and look at it in relation to your health and well-being. "Many women who are a healthy weight think they have to lose weight. Others who are overweight think they're a healthy weight," says registered dietitian Lois Ferguson. “Healthy weight is all about eating sensibly, being physically active and feeling good – not about monitoring every bite."
