Eating breakfast makes you smart

How it helps with weight goals too.

By Dairy Farmers of Canada

Eating breakfast makes you smart
About 40 percent of Canadians skip breakfast because they think it will help them lose weight. But research has shown that people who eat breakfast have a much easier time managing their weight, according to registered dietitian Zannat Reza. Eating breakfast also improves concentration and is a good start to getting all the nutrients you need in a day.

Making the morning meal
A good breakfast includes at least three food groups and a source of protein such as milk. Including protein is another healthy weight strategy. Studies show protein helps decrease untimely cravings – and when cravings hit, many people give in to empty treats such as cookies and donuts instead of making nutritious choices.

What’s for breakfast?
Zannat says breakfast can be as simple as a fruit and yogurt smoothie with a homemade muffin, or a peanut butter and banana on toast with milk. “We know that many people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables and milk products – and these foods are easy to include at breakfast and they can help you reach and stay at a healthy weight.”
