Teach your children well
Parents are powerful role models. Studies have shown that children with parents who make healthy food choices are more likely to adopt these habits and keep them through adulthood too, says registered dietitian Zannat Reza. "Children develop lifestyle habits from a really young age, and it's important to remember that they learn by copying their parents."
Emphasize the foods children need to eat
"We know that children need to eat more fruits, vegetables and milk products," says Zannat. Fruits and vegetables supply vitamins and minerals, and milk products are essential in developing strong bones and teeth. Studies have shown that milk products can help people reach and stay at a healthy weight too. "And helping kids have a healthy weight is important because about one third of children are overweight."
Remember: monkey-see, monkey-do!
The best way to set the right example is to adopt healthy habits yourself so children will see you making all those healthy choices," says Zannat. "It's important to sit down and eat meals together as a family. Also, drink milk during meals, and snack on fruit instead of less nutritious foods."
