Earth Day: 8 ways to "green" your life

In honour of Earth Day, we wanted to share some of the top ways to "green" your lifestyle. These fixes might seem like common sense but they'll make a huge difference. Every little bit counts! Earth Day 1. Ditch your toxic cleaning products. Have you ever read the warnings on many traditional cleaning products? Usually they tell you not to let the product touch your skin and to wear gloves and even a face mask. And then you're going to clean your kitchen with it where you put all of your fresh food that you'll later ingest?? I think not. My favourite green cleaning solution is vinegar, baking soda and water. It works and you don't have to worry about inhaling any toxins. 2. Buy organic. Yes, we know that sometimes organic foods aren't all they're cracked up to be but generally you should try and buy organic when it comes to certain foods. Known as the dirty dozen, produce like apples, strawberries and bell peppers are high in pesticides so make these a priority. 3. Buy local. Try an organic delivery of local foods or head to a local butcher who sources the meat from nearby farms.  Knowing the origin of your product is half the battle. And local food requires less shipping so less greenhouse gases in the process. 4. Install a new toilet. Yes, a new toilet may seem like a major investment but a low-flush toilet will save both you and the environment a ton of wasted water. Nothing mystifies me more than using clean, fresh water to flush down waste. It is quite literally a waste. Check out some affordable options  here. 5. Eat less meat. First of all, eating less meat is way more affordable when it comes to meal planning. Second of all, practising Meatless Mondays or just having meat twice a week is a great way to better yourself and the planet. Livestock use hundreds of gallons of water and are the cause of deforestation worldwide. Veggies are more sustainable and full of delicious antioxidants. Check out 101 vegetarian recipes here. 6. Change your lightbulbs. Opt for LED lights over your traditional bulbs to save on both energy costs and energy usage. 7. Take public transit. Ride the bus or subway instead of driving to work. Sure, it can be cramped and busy but commuting via transit is a great way to save energy, reduce your emissions and a way to catch up on your reading. 8. Try a sustainable energy source. Solar power panels can reduce your energy usage by harnessing the power from the sun. Buy a panel for your house or try a solar-powered product.
