Essential running gear

The most important gear? Running shoes properly fitted for you. "Don't just buy your running buddy's shoes," advises John Stanton, founder of the Running Room. Having your gait assessed by a running expert will help ensure you are wearing shoes that suit how your feet strike the ground, whether that is normal pronation, overpronation (when your foot rolls in) or underpronation (when your foot rolls outward).

• Avoid cotton socks, which absorb sweat and can lead to blisters. Look for a pair of double-layered synthetic breathable socks.

• Gripping a water bottle in your hand can affect your running. Wear a fuel belt; one featuring a zippered pouch will give you a spot to carry ID, emergency cash, snacks and your mobile phone.

• Your lightweight yoga sports bra just won't cut it on a long run. Invest in a couple of high-impact sports bras (jog in-store to test how much support they offer you).

• Purchase gear made of sweat-wicking fabrics that also incorporates reflective materials and detailing, so vehicles can easily spot you at dawn and in the evening.
