Family wellness makeover: Month 4

By Ylva Van Buuren

The Morfidis see serious results as they achieve their short-term goals.

Bravo to the Morfidises -- Despina and George and their children Ria and Stefi. The family has successfully reached the four-month mark on their yearlong makeover. Here's an update on their progress. (To see how they think they're doing, check out the Morfidis family makeover diary.)

Despina took her first-ever fitness class (a Body Flow yoga stretch) at GoodLife Fitness Club accompanied by George and the girls.

Despina is seeing muscles on her body that she's never noticed before. She invites friends and family to "feel my abs." She has lost almost 15 pounds and a total of 17 inches from her hips, legs, arms and abs.

Fitness is now a priority for Despina. When George was booking a hotel for a quick family vacation, Despina asked him to check if there was a gym on-site.

George found an eating strategy that helps limit his cravings for sweets and high-fat foods. After eating healthy choices (fruit, cereal with skim milk and an egg white omelette with vegetables, no cheese) at the breakfast buffet in the hotel, he went back for what he really wanted: a lemon Danish and a chocolate croissant. But he only ate a little of each because "the small amount was enough to curb the craving and satisfy the need for something sweet."

Ria, 14, achieved her fitness goal of running three kilometres without stopping; she did it in about 30 minutes and credits regular training and encouragement from Stefi and her dad.

Stefi, 11, has mastered a back handspring and credits upper body strength work with Sue such as chin-ups and other exercises.
